Great article! I always feel so much guilt about my full-time job - and my kids like to lay it on thick too: 'why are you always working?'; 'Why can't you pick me up from school like so-and-so's mum?'; 'I just want to stay home with you today' (puppy-dog eyes) Etc. etc. I usually just say, 'I have to go to work' since I'm afraid if I tell them I love my job, they'll feel like I love them less somehow. But a couple of days ago I tried a different approach, and told my 4 yr-old that it was precisely because I love my job, because it's important to me, that I had to go everyday. Surprisingly, he accepted that explanation much more happily! Perhaps me loving my job also gives him permission to love what's outside the home - going to pre-school, for example, without feeling bad about it? And maybe it's less scary for kids to think that when they grow up they might also get to do a job they care deeply about.
